HAYLOFT HAPPENINGS – JULY 2010

HAYLOFT HAPPENINGS – JULY 2010

What’s a State Fair without cream puffs?  I know it’s something I have never experienced – nor want to!  Your friends at the Malt House have you in mind when they present their very own “State Fair” (the very funny musical) and also give you the opportunity to have a cream puff!  Every night we will be selling our own version of the State Fair cream puff as well as providing the “best state fair in our state”.  You need to see this show if you haven’t already gotten the chance.  Truly hilarious and a charming bit of Americana !  Production dates for “State Fair” continue through July 17, 22 – 25, 29 - 31 and August 1 (Wednesday – Saturday on the first weekend and on the second and third weekends Thursdays – Sundays).  Times are Wednesday – Saturday evenings at 7:30 PM and Sunday matinees at 2 PM.  Tickets are available at the Daily Brew Coffee House at 557 Milwaukee Avenue in Burlington at the cost of $12.  We will also have tickets available on line at www.thehaylofters.com.

Following on the heels of “State Fair” is the endearing Disney musical classic, 101 Dalmatians.  Already I’m hearing wonderful things about how great the children are in this show – sounds like you don’t want to miss it!  Dates for this Young Haylofters production will be August 12 – 15 and 19 – 22 (Thursday – Saturday evenings at 7:30 PM and Sunday matinees at 2 PM).  Tickets will be available at the Daily Brew Coffee House priced at $7/ticket.

Have you missed auditions for the first two season shows and are still interested in appearing in a wonderful upcoming show at the Malt House?  I have a few suggestions for you.

First of all, Pamela Schroeder will be directing our fall musical farce A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forumand is looking for people to audition.  “Forum” is light, fast-paced, witty, irreverent and one of the funniest musicals ever written.  Pamela tells me that “Forum” is mainly an adult man’s show but that there are also good parts for adult women.  The show has minimal dance requirements and she says “it is a wild, madcap romp, fun for the actors as well as the audience”.  Auditioners should come prepared with a song to sing and expect some cold script reading.  Auditions for “Forum” will be held at the Malt House Theater on Monday, August 30 at 6:30 PM.  Production dates for “Forum” will be October 7 – 9, 15 – 17 and 22 - 24.

Not interested in a play part, yet you still want to sing?  We have just the thing.  Jordan Debbink, director of our upcoming “Shine the Light” Benefit concert for the Haylofters is still looking for adult members to join the Benefit concert choir.  Production dates for this important event will be Saturday, November 20 and Sunday, November 21.  Jordan says to call him at 262-661-3317 if you want to sing with the concert choir.

OK, so you don’t want to audition – but you do want to be part of the 2011 season.  The Haylofters are looking for “a few good men” (or women) to direct!  Remember, our year usually consists of 3 regular season plays (we have also been known to throw in a few bonus plays now and then).  The 3 regular season plays are: spring – a straight show (comedy/drama) or a small musical, summer – a HUGE musical, and fall – another straight show or small musical.  Anyone interested should send a resume’ featuring previous theatrical experience of any kind; plays you are interested in directing (the shows are subject to approval by the Board of Directors); projected needs for the production (budget, set, costumes etc.) and the reason you chose the Haylofters.  Send these materials to: Haylofters, P.O. Box 164 ,

Burlington, WI , 53105 by September 15.  We are also seeking directors to direct children for our Young Haylofters presentation.  Directors can suggest any shows that they would enjoy directing, but, of course, the shows will need to meet the approval of our Board of Directors and be appropriate for our audiences.  Anyone interested in directing for the 2011 season, needs to submit an application by September 15 to be considered.  Applications should include:  a statement of intent and reason for choosing a particular play and previous theatrical experience of any kind.  Send these materials to: Haylofters, P.O. Box 164 , Burlington , WI , 53105 .  We hope to see a lot of applications from all of you!

Do you have the right stuff to help us out in our never ending quest for talented and hard working board members?  I know it’s only July and the next Haylofters election is in December, but we want you all to consider taking a part in making our theater a better place by running for the Board.  Who can run?  You must be 18 years of age or older and a paid member of the Haylofters.  Only one member of a family may run for the board – that is, for example, if a husband is running for the board, then his wife or their children can’t also be running to be for that same board. Board terms are three years.  I know this is a time commitment, but, in order for out theater to advance, we must have the best people running it, so consider joining us in this very meaningful way.

Finally, the next scheduled board meeting will be held at the home of Don Fresen, 165 W. Jefferson St. on Wednesday, August 11, at 7 PM (due to production of “101 Dalmatians”).

Your Hayloft Treasurer and Board member,

                                       Phyllis Hartwick
